When I came up with my nick name we were in the middle of construction on our bakery, and I was joking about the fact that I had never baked a thing in my life! Here I was a 36 year old, 6′ 8″ dude with a scraggly long beard about to open a bakery! It seemed comical to me as the name rolled off my tongue.
In June of 2018 I made my way back from a 2 year stay in Memphis (Story Later) with no real plans in mind except find a job that I loved, and try to be a good dad. I had been working in Memphis as a manager on a scrap yard for a demolition company and I really enjoyed it. But I found it still wasn’t what I loved. I really liked operating the heavy machines, it reminded me of when I was a little boy and I had my Tonka trucks out in the back yard digging in the dirt(It was manly work!). But I still wasn’t completely happy. When I was 17 years old my uncle Keith got me into the commercial drywall business. I spent the majority of 15 years working for a few drywall companies as an estimator, project manager, field superintendent, and even started a few company’s for myself. But like most jobs, it was just what I knew how to do and what paid the bills. Over the years Mom and I would always find ourselves talking and dreaming about how cool it would be if we could expand her restaurant and have me help her manage it. We would sit on the front porch and drink coffee and come up with our plans of how it would be and what we would have to do to make it happen.( I’ve always been a dreamer, I think I get it from my grandmother. ) Well that dream came true near the end of 2018 when the owners of an old building not far from Moms restaurant walked into Marcy Jo’s Mealhouse. http://www.marcyjos.com They told her about how the people that had been leasing from them decided to shut down, and they thought of us because we had approached them about leasing it a few years back before grandma and Joey got sick. That same night she told me about it, and the next morning we made the 4 mile trip down to what is now Marcy Jo’s Bakery. http://www.marcyjosbakery.com
Our doors at the bakery opened November 28th 2018 and since then people have been coming in like crazy to #GETBAKEDgoods from Marcy Jo’s Bakery. We do all the baking for Marcy Jo’s Mealhouse, Marcy Jo’s Muletown and the Bakery along with getting some of our breads into local restaurants like the Governors Table at Henry Horton State Park.https://tnstateparks.com/parks/restaurant/henry-horton
Even though it still needs some tweaking, we have figured out how to ship our famous cinnamon rolls to our customers front doorstep. Marcyjosbakery.com
I may not always be the one back there slaving away kneading dough and baking all the amazing baked goods that come out of Marcy Jo’s Bakery, but I can now say that I love my job. I believe the good Lord put me through all of those jobs and all of those management positions and gave me the love for dreaming big just so I could end up here doing exactly what I am doing, “changing lives one bite at a time” as the tallbeardeddoughboy!
